Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Medications Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that individuals who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People buying these drugs need to be aware of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a return to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Experts believe the way of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

People who have come off the medication describe a intense resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if a switch activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described one woman.

This challenge is worsened if individuals have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Use

Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among women than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural support.
