The Former President's Woke Warning Overlooks Europe's True Threat: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a flawed view of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "progressive" policies represent an grave risk to European civilization. Yet, this argument is based on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The actual challenge confronting Europe is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

A Glaring Economic Gap Separating the US and Europe

The data reveal a sobering picture. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, while a mere 13.5% increase for the European Union. During this period, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Currently, about half of the world’s top fifty technology firms are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Problem

The growing disparity is driven by stronger productivity growth in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology leadership is decidedly US-centric. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This gap raises a pressing issue: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does Europe stand? Most analysts agree it is essentially a two-horse race between the US and China, with European nations starting at a significant handicap.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of key factors account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a true unified investment market, which caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hamper European business. A US startup can launch a service under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a bigger population, is divided among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was once viewed with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its capacity for pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

Despite these hurdles, one can find causes for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have begun to advance substantial change. Notable analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the necessity of major reforms.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable far greater levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe still possesses considerable strengths: high-quality human capital, top-tier education systems, and world-class labs. Alongside a large internal market and high savings rates, these foundations have the potential to unleash a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating next-generation tech, it can still dramatically boost productivity by implementing and tailoring advancements from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now faces a decisive moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been steady. But, if it fails to take decisive action to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could turn into a sudden and irreversible decline in global economic relevance.
